IGNOU regional center Shillong has a long history, as it started in April 1986 when it was overseeing the northeastern regional hub of Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura. The Guwahati Regional Center was established in March 1999, with jurisdiction over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. From 1999 to the end of 2000 and early 2001, the IGNOU Regional Center oversaw the states of Shillong, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.
IGNOU Shillong Regional Centre has the responsibility of catering to learners in Meghalaya only, and has covered all the Districts of the State in terms of establishing Learner Support Centres, excepting that of South West Garo Hills.
The University also aims to provide opportunities for education and training based on specific needs for continuous professional development and skill enhancement of professionals in the service.
IGNOU stand centers are Laitumkhrah, Tura, Mairang, Cherrapunji, Mendipathar, Nampoh, Jaintia, Umsing, Maosinram, Shillong, Nangstoin, Tikrikilla, Nanthimakh, Mokhai.

Eligibility criteria:
- Candidates have to complete 10 + 2 or its equivalent. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree with 50% marks for general section and 45% marks for SC / ST / OBC / PH section.
